LUMEN ATELIER designs light installations for galleries, civic spaces, and private collectors — each piece built around a single material study of how illumination becomes architecture.
Before stone, before glass, before line — there is the photon. Our practice begins where architecture ends: in the volume a room holds after the walls are decided. We treat that volume as sculptable matter, shaping intensity, color, and duration until a space learns to breathe on its own schedule. A finished installation is not a fixture. It is a slow argument that darkness and brilliance are the same substance, observed at different speeds.
Each begins as a material study and ends as a room you can stand inside.
A vaulted nave woven from eight thousand fibre strands, each carrying a single colour pulled from stained-glass spectra. Walk beneath it and the canopy reads as a slow sunrise that never completes.
A floor of light that answers the room. Footsteps, breath, a dropped glass — each sound becomes a ripple of cyan that fades before you can name it. The installation is finished when the room goes quiet.
A single beam, folded through hanging vapour, that traces one full hour of daylight across a bare wall in compressed time. Visitors arrive strangers and leave having shared a dusk.
We walk the room at three different hours and listen to what it is missing.

Fixtures, controls, and timing are drafted as a score the room will perform each evening.
We turn the piece on for the first time in an empty room, then leave it alone for a night.
LUMEN ATELIER was founded on a single conviction: that the most important architecture in any building is the light that fills it. We work in small numbers — rarely more than two commissions a year — because every room deserves a piece that could not have been designed for any other. Our atelier moves between Berlin and Kyoto, following the latitude where dusk falls latest.
